Multimedia on the web has come a long way since 1995 when I first
began
exploring this topic. The main
question to ask is how
necessary is sound to a particular website. There
are lots of options, and as always, some are more appropriate than
others.
My client, Audio Book Club.com, needs 5:00 minute excerpts from audio
cassettes encoded as both RealAudio and Windows Media streaming audio
files. I equalize and record the excerpts as mono 16-bit 44.1khz .wav
files
and then encode the streaming audio files. For them, I deliver
data cd's containing the source .wav files, the RealAudio and Windows
Media files cross referenced to their ISBN numbers ready to upload to
their servers.
